In-flight PIV applied to Passenger Aircraft

Vortices visualized in the light sheet.

Exploitation of AIM² developments - Application of In-flight PIV

Beginning of January 2015 DLR and Airbus performed a flight test on the DLRs A320 ATRA aircraft including an in-flight PIV setup based on the developments made within AIM². The intension of this activity was to show the feasibility of in-flight flow field measurements by PIV using cloud particles as seeding. The measurement are was located on the upper side on the wing with the light sheet oriented span-wise in order to catch the vortices shed from the nacelle and the strake. The recorded image data now is further processed in order to obtain the flow velocity distribution within the measurement area.
